Seeing A Classical Raag

All classical music raags sound more or less same to me. Clearly my listening is not evolved enough. After all the visual sense is the primary sense in most humans, including me.

However I can feel the personality of Raag Bhairav somewhat.

Recently I came across a tiny Bhairav aalaap composition by Pune based Khayal Music World that was so clear and depicted that personality so well. It kept drawing me in. So, for others like me whose visual sense is sharper than the aural, I created a visualization of the movements in that composition — so that you may see Raag Bhairav.

Along with the movement of notes I have also tried to visualize the accumulative and lingering effect of the music based on past phrases falling as and creating ripples in water. Also, Raag Bhairav is an early morning raag — it really feels most ‘handsome’ at day break. Hence, I’ve tried to give a feel of that too with changing colors in the video depicting day break as the music progresses. Lastly the attempt has been to visualize the serene and solemn nature of Bhairav too. The repeating Sa Sa Sa were feeling like the peaceful sound of a temple bell in a valley.

Do see the video and let me know how you like this visualization of Bhairav. Share it with others who might be intrigued by the proposition of seeing a raag. If you see it on the phone turn your phone around to view in landscape mode.
